How to Cook Pennywort and Ground Pork Soup without Using Fish Sauce / Canh Rau Ma Thit Xay Khong Co Nuoc Mam

Pennywort is not a dollarweed / dollar weed. I believe they are in the same family of plant but belong to difference types. Pennywort is thinner and lighter color than dollar weed. I have never eat dollar weed, so I don’t know.

Pennywort is a great fresh vegetable for us. Pennywort is not only be eaten as a raw vegetable but it also can be eaten as boiling vegetable or blanching vegetable. Not stopping there, you can make drink from pennywort, pennywort drink, pennywort and young coconut juice drink… However, you must be careful. To me, you should not consume a lot of pennywort at a time suddenly because pennywort can make your blood pressure going down so fast, especially when combining with young coconut juice; so that’s not a good idea consuming a large amount of pennywort.

How to Make
PENNYWORT and GROUND PORK SOUP
(no fish sauce)

Ingredients:

  • pennywort (1/4 lb)
  • pre-mixed ground pork (1/2 lb)
  • salt (1 pinch)
  • seasoning (Nước Cốt Hủ Tiếu) (1 tsp)

Directions:

  1. bring water to boil
  2. add meat, cook
  3. skim scum off
  4. add seasoning Nước Cốt Hủ Tiếu
  5. add vegetable, cook… until pork is cooked.

Pre-mixed ground pork = 1.5 lb ground pork + 1 tbsp seasoning soy sauce + 1/2 tbsp salt + 1/2 tbsp oyster sauce.

Why did I have an idea to use Nước Cốt Hủ Tiếu replacing fish sauce, which we are normally use as a part of seasoning in soup? The reason is the fish sauce was run out and I didn’t plan to go to the shop in that day, so I use Nước Cốt Hủ Tiếu instead. If you don’t have Nước Cốt Hủ Tiếu, you can use other seasonings like ramen noodle soup’s seasoning package.
